changing Medicare Supplement Plans in California

Can You Change Medicare Supplement Plans in California?

Many people who already have a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan wonder whether they are allowed to change insurance companies or lower their monthly premium.

In most states, switching Medicare Supplement plans may require answering health questions. However, residents of California often have an opportunity each year to review their options and change plans without medical underwriting.

I help Medicare beneficiaries throughout California review their coverage annually to determine whether switching plans makes sense.

When Can You Change Medicare Supplement Plans in California?

California offers a special annual opportunity called the California Birthday Rule.

During your Birthday Rule window:

  • You may switch insurance companies
  • You usually do not need to answer health questions
  • Coverage benefits remain the same if you keep the same plan letter
  • You may be able to reduce your monthly premium

Your switching window lasts 60 days after your birthday each year. Most, but not all companies also let you apply during the 30 days before your birthday.

This creates a 60 to 90-day opportunity each year to compare plans.

Can You Change to Any Medicare Supplement Plan?

You can switch to any plan with the same or fewer benefits.

Common examples include:

  • Plan F → Plan F
  • Plan F → Plan G
  • Plan G → Plan G
  • Plan G → Plan N
  • Plan N → Plan N

The goal is usually to keep similar coverage while improving long-term affordability.

I help clients determine which options are available based on their current plan.

What If You Live Outside California?

In states like Arizona, changing Medicare Supplement plans typically requires answering health questions unless you qualify for a special guaranteed-issue situation.

NOTE: Several other states, including Nevada, have similar birthday rules.

However, it can still be helpful to review your coverage periodically to confirm whether switching is possible.

Why Many People Review Their Medicare Supplement Plan Each Year

Insurance companies adjust premiums differently over time.

Because Medicare Supplement benefits are standardized, reviewing your coverage annually can help confirm whether:

  • Your premium is still competitive
  • Another company offers the same coverage for less
  • Your current plan remains the best long-term option

Even if no change is recommended, reviewing your plan provides peace of mind.

How I Help Medicare Supplement Clients Review Their Options

Each year I help clients:

  • Compare multiple insurance companies
  • Review eligibility for Birthday Rule changes
  • Confirm whether switching plans makes sense
  • Identify potential savings opportunities
  • Complete paperwork if a change is appropriate

There is no cost for this service.

Insurance companies pay the same commission whether you enroll directly with them or work with an independent Medicare Supplement specialist.

Should You Review Your Plan This Year?

If your birthday is approaching, this is the best time to find out whether you qualify to change your Medicare Supplement plan without answering health questions.

I’m happy to review your options at no cost.
