If you’re turning 65, you have a special opportunity to enroll in Medicare during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP). This is a 7-month window that begins three months before your birthday month, includes your birthday month, and continues for three months after. Enrolling during this time helps ensure your coverage starts on time and allows you to avoid potential late enrollment penalties.
During this enrollment period, you can sign up for Original Medicare (Part A and Part B), sign up for a Prescription Drug Plan (Part D), and apply for a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan. For many people, this is the best time to review your options and select coverage that fits both your healthcare needs and your budget.
If you are considering a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan, there is also an important 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period that begins when your Medicare Part B coverage starts and you are age 65 or older. During this time, you can choose any available supplement plan without answering health questions or worrying about being declined due to pre-existing conditions. After this window ends, approval for a Medicare Supplement plan requires medical underwriting, and coverage may be declined in many cases. That’s why it’s important to review your options while this protection is available.
My practice focuses on helping clients enroll in Medicare Supplement (Medigap) coverage. Many people appreciate the flexibility to see any doctor NATIONWIDE who accepts Medicare and the long-term stability these plans provide. For clients in California and Nevada, there are additional protections that may allow you to change supplement plans later without medical underwriting through the California and Nevada Birthday Rule. If you’re new to Medicare, the choices can feel overwhelming, but I’m here to help make the process simple and confident from the start.
As an independent agent, I work with all the major insurance carriers, not just one company. I shop the market for my clients every year to help make sure they are not paying more than necessary for their Medigap coverage.
