Pennsylvania Medicare Supplement Plans
A Medicare Supplement, often called a Medigap policy, is not the same as a Medicare Advantage plan.
A Medicare Supplement is a policy from a private insurance company designed to pay expenses not covered by Original Medicare Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical). Medicare was never intended to cover all hospital and other medical expenses and purchasing a Medicare Supplement is one way to cover some or all of what basic Medicare does not provide.
You must have Original Medicare designated as your primary payer in order to have a Medicare Supplement. In other words Medicare must pay your bills first before they can be paid by a Medicare Supplement.
When you have Original Medicare and a Medicare Supplement you can generally go to any doctor and any hospital in the United States as long as they accept Medicare. You do not need referrals or permission to see specialists. These factors are important to people who want the freedom to choose their own doctors and those who travel frequently or spend parts of the year away from their primary residence.
There are ten "standardized" Medigap plans identified by letters A through N. Each standardized policy must include the same benefits, no matter which insurance company sells it. Cost is usually the only difference between Medigap policies with the same letter. MedigapShopper can help you determine which company can offer you the lowest cost Medicare Supplement in Pennsylvania. Call us at 800-649-9604.
Claims for benefits under a Medicare Supplement are all processed electronically without the need for claim forms. You make no copayments at doctor visits or for other services. If there are any amounts due you are billed by the provider after your claim has been processed. The amount you may owe is determined by which of the plans A through N you have.
Medicare Supplement policies are guaranteed renewable and the coverage does not change from year to year.
Medicare Supplement policies do not include prescription coverage. In order to have coverage for prescription medication you will need to purchase a separate Medicare Part D plan (also available from private insurance companies) or have coverage through the VA (Veterans Administration) or Pennsylvania's PACE/PACENet program, etc.
